If you’ve been to Cape Town recently or are a local, you know that brighter days feel lightyears away. Someone had to splash some vibrance back into the City, and that’s exactly what artist Stefan Smit did with a new multi-storey mural.

Cape Town, South Africa (21 June, 2023) — Amid a grey and gloomy Cape Town, artist Stefan Smit gave the Mother City a splash of vibrance with a new and unapologetically epic multi-storey mural.

Taking to Foreshore, an area that’s been swept with moody skies for the majority of winter, Smit (AKA, TheseTenFingers) did what all great artists do—he gave people something bigger than themselves to look at. Several times bigger, in fact.

There’s nothing like a little awe to take a City out of a funk, and the CBD now has a new giant canvas to ensure it!

Gorgeous in a familiar way, Smit’s piece ‘Envelope Me’ encapsulates a sense of searching and finding; individuality and connection. Strong in colour and in detail, the five-storey creation adds to other walls Smit has brought to life over the years across the country; including ‘Beyond Boundaries’ in Bree Street, ‘A Bit of Balance’ in Johannesburg’s Oxford Parks and one of the warmest depictions of Nelson Mandela in the Kruger National Park.

According to Smit, the multi-storey mural magic required battles against the rain and some creativity pushing to evoke those vibrant emotions. You can watch the piece coming together stroke by stroke here.

Meanwhile, a community of unofficial artists came together in another way to bring cheer to South Africans who need it most. 67 Blankets for Mandela Day teams joined forces for a cross-country road trip, where some blanket works were no short of art and knitted their way into hearts everywhere.
