A young leopard came across a porcupine in the Kruger National Park and wasn’t quite sure what to do with it, he eventually got bored and wondered off.
Juvenile Leopards are very cute, they are still learning how to do many things like hunting, which animals to approach and which ones to steer clear of. Recently, a young leopard in the Kruger was spotted trying to figure out a porcupine.
Ard van de Wetering and his family visit the Kruger every year and this year, their 30th holiday at the National Park, they spotted a once in a lifetime sight.
“A leopard disappeared into a culvert. Unfortunately for the porcupine, it was hiding there as well. Shortly thereafter, both the leopard and porcupine appeared right next to our vehicle, porcupines indeed have a brilliant self-defence mechanism.”
“On a Sunday afternoon my wife and I, decided to take a last game drive Southwest of Shingwedzi on the R52 gravel road, about a km Northeast of the Tshanga / Bateleur turnoff. It was a cold and windy day, and we did not expect much. The road is very scenic though, and we were driving slowly and enjoying the moment.”
“It was a once in a lifetime sighting. I have seen footage of leopard and porcupine interaction in the past, but in my wildest dreams I did not think that we will also experience it first-hand one day.”
The encounter looked similar to that of a tango, the young leopard would approach the porcupine and then back away. They kept going at it, back and forth, until the leopard got bored and lay down to watch his spiky prey.
