Johannesburg residents eager to experience Main Street Sundays this weekend will have to wait a little longer, with organisers postponing the event due to forecasts predicting cold, wet and challenging weather conditions.
Johannesburg, South Africa (21 June 2026) – Main Street Sundays, which was set to return to central Johannesburg today, has been officially postponed due to forecasts of severe weather across the city.
While the news may be disappointing for the thousands of people looking forward to the event, organisers say the decision was made with attendees’ safety, comfort and overall experience firmly in mind.
Following the remarkable success of the inaugural Main Street Sundays in April, which attracted more than 5,000 visitors to the CBD, Jozi My Jozi and its partners had been preparing to once again transform Main Street into a car-free celebration of community, creativity and urban life. But with the South African Weather Service, AccuWeather and other forecasters predicting very cold conditions and a high likelihood of rain, the team decided that postponement was the best option.
Jozi My Jozi CEO Innocent Mabusela shared an apology to everyone involved in bringing the event to life.
“We want to offer our sincere apologies to all our activators, small businesses, creatives, performers, suppliers, our partners, and the general public for the inconvenience caused by the postponement of this edition of Main Street Sundays. Our priority is to ensure another exceptional experience for everyone, which the inaugural edition in April provided.”
“We have been monitoring weather forecasts for the last few days, and it has now become clear that the adverse weather will have a serious impact on delivering this outdoor event.”
The good news is that this isn’t a cancellation. It’s simply a rain check.
Organisers have confirmed that Main Street Sundays will return in August, a month traditionally known for its sunny skies, mild temperatures and dry conditions in Johannesburg. The move is aimed at ensuring the event can deliver everything people loved about the first edition: safe streets, family-friendly experiences, bustling markets, live music, art, food and opportunities to explore the city on foot.
“We have taken the decision to move the next Main Street Sundays event to August, when the weather improves,” Mabusela explained.

The family activities, market stalls, performances, walking and cycling experiences, activations and city tours will all form part of the rescheduled event once the new date is confirmed.
“Main Street Sundays is designed as a family-friendly, outdoor playground, and car-free celebration of Johannesburg’s inner city. It provides an opportunity to walk, cycle, skate and play in the streets. Adverse weather will make it impossible to deliver the safe, accessible and vibrant environment that Jozi My Jozi and our partners are committed to providing,” said Mabusela.
Registration details and RSVPs will automatically be transferred to the new event date, with additional information being shared directly with vendors, performers and community partners.
If April taught Johannesburg anything, it’s that people are eager to reconnect with their city. They want to explore it, celebrate it and experience it together. A few weeks’ delay doesn’t change that excitement. If anything, it gives everyone something to look forward to when the sunshine returns.
