Remembering Nandi Nyembe: The Soul of South African Storytelling

With an acting career spanning over 53 years in film, television and theatre, Nandi Nyembe has left an indelible mark on the soul of a nation she both taught and mothered through her powerful performances.

Johannesburg, South Africa (25 August 2025) – Whether she was given the role of a nurturing mother guiding youngsters onto the right path, a compassionate nurse offering sound health advice to the ill and misinformed, or a stylish gogo whose keen observations and powerful presence captivated everyone around her, Mam’ Nandi Nyembe brought an unmatched dedication and passion to each character, leaving a lasting impact on those who experienced her performances.

Her remarkable talent has established her as a beloved figure in South Africa’s entertainment industry, where she breathed life into some of the most cherished stories and roles we’ve had the privilege to witness in film, on television, and in theatre.

With a career spanning over 53 years in acting and storytelling, Nyembe is best known for her roles in Yizo Yizo, Zone 14 and Soul City.

In one of her many previous interviews, she was quoted as expressing how happy she was to have had the privilege to tell proudly black stories in an authentic way throughout her life.

Her passing, after a brave battle with deteriorating health, was announced in a joint statement by the Nyembe family and the National Department of Sport, Arts and Culture on Saturday, 23 August.

“Mam’ Nandi was far more than an actress; she was the very soul of South African storytelling. A teacher, a guide, and a mother to this nation, she carried our struggles, our laughter, and our victories through every performance with truth, dignity, and heart. Through her life and work, she gave our people pride and our stories a purpose.”

Nyembe’s grandson, Jabulani, added that to the world, she was a gifted actress, but to their family, she was their everything.

“Her love, laughter, and strength will stay with us always. We are so grateful for the outpouring of love, prayers and support during this time.”

Condolences and heartfelt tributes have poured in from South Africans and beyond in honour of her extraordinary legacy.

Nyembe’s illustrious journey is one described as one that broke barriers, and her life a shining example to women from everywhere, especially disadvantaged backgrounds, to dream beyond their circumstances.
