When a senseless tragedy stripped a 25-year-old spaza shop owner of his livelihood, mobility and health, South Africans rallied together to supply the life-saving medical equipment his rural hospital simply couldn’t provide.

Gauteng, South Africa (31 July 2026) – An honest spaza shop owner, Thumelo, was known by many in his neighbourhood as the person to run to for a quick snack or a loaf of bread. However, those with less innocent intentions would change that honest life as he knew it.

One day in February began like any other: Thumelo opened up shop, ready to serve his community. But things took a tragic turn for the worse when he was stabbed in the neck during a robbery. The attack left him with a spinal cord injury, and he subsequently developed severe pressure sores that became life-threatening.

Thumelo is only 25 years old.

After learning about the severity of his condition and how the rural government hospital where he was admitted lacked the necessary equipment for his treatment, including a VAC dressing machine, the Boikanyo Dion Herson Foundation reached out to the wider community in May. They sought help for the young man whose condition was growing more critical by the day, despite ongoing treatment and multiple surgeries.

About a week later, thanks to the generosity of donors who stepped up to help, a ripple mattress arrived. A private medical company that hires out VAC pumps also provided a machine, accompanied by their own nurse, together with a specialist nurse in provincial wound management. Together with the local nursing team, they taught the hospital staff how to operate the machine, which uses a 24/7 suction pump to drain infections.

Although Thumelo actually needed three machines for his three separate sores, the hospital made the absolute most of the training. Doctors, nursing staff, and therapists all gathered around his bed for what became an incredibly successful practical session in advanced wound care.

A few months down the line, Thumelo is still fighting. It is thanks to a compassionate community that continues to support his recovery after a brutal robbery turned his world upside down and at a time when specialised medical equipment simply wasn’t available at his hospital.

“When we shared his story, you responded,” the Boikanyo team shared in a heartwarming update.

Through ongoing donations, Thumelo has received specialised wound-care equipment, a ripple mattress, expert nursing support, and tools to help him communicate more independently.

Boikanyo continues to rally behind Thumelo and now hopes to secure an electric wheelchair so he can regain some mobility and begin rebuilding his life.

“Today, he’s still fighting, but he has a far better chance than he did a few months ago. Thank you to every person who donated, shared, and cared,” Boikanyo thanked.
