From tense battles on turbulent waters to teamwork in the women’s race, South African paddlers showcase endurance and strategy in the Eastern Cape’s iconic two-day marathon.

Cradock, South Africa (15 October 2025) – From tense battles on turbulent waters to seamless teamwork in the women’s race, South African paddlers showcase skill, endurance and strategy in the Eastern Cape’s iconic two-day marathon.

This past weekend, the 2025 Fish River Canoe Marathon delivered all the drama and excitement fans love. What’s even better is that South African paddlers were at the forefront.

The women’s K2 race saw Hilary Bruss and Bridgitte Hartley paddle away with a commanding lead, while the men’s K2 clash between Andy Birkett and Hamish Lovemore and their challengers kept spectators on the edge of their seats.

In the women’s race, Hilary and Bridgitte proved their class early. A small scare came when Bridgitte capsized at Double Trouble Weir, but thanks to her partner’s quick thinking and expert rolling technique got her back in the boat, and from there, the duo pulled ahead.

By the start of Day 2, they held a 12-minute lead. This margin grew even further by the time they reached Cradock. Hartley reflected on the race:

“(The swim at Double Trouble) was the only real problem we had on the first day. We spun out at Soutpans but everything else was perfect.”

Their flawless teamwork and resilience proved why they have become such a formidable pair in South African paddling.

Meanwhile, the men’s race played out like a high-stakes thriller. Andy and Hamish faced constant pressure from Greg Louw and Matthew Fenn, with leadership switching hands in a tactical battle that tested every ounce of stamina and strategy.

“On Day 2 the racing and tactics was not one-sided at all. We were there to try and win, and they were there to try,” Andy explained.

In the end, Andy secured his seventh Fish River Marathon title, while teammate Hamish secured the first.

South Africa’s paddlers once again showed why the Fish River Canoe Marathon is a highlight of the country’s paddling calendar. For both seasoned champions and rising talents, the two day Eastern Cape adventure remains a test of skill, grit, and camaraderie.
