A team of security officers turned an unusual traffic stop into a heartwarming rescue, helping four stray cows make their way safely across Johannesburg’s busy streets to reach SPCA Randburg.
Johannesburg, South Africa (06 August 2026) – Last Thursday, traffic briefly came to a standstill for some cows – literally.
When reports came in about four stray cows roaming near Pappachinos on Witkoppen Road, security officers from SB Security gladly stepped in to help get them to safety.
At the Randburg SPCA’s request, the officers carefully guided the cows through Riverbend and Deco Park before crossing Malibongwe Drive and accompanying them to the SPCA’s premises. Along the way, the security operations team helped control traffic and temporarily block roads to keep the animals, motorists and everyone involved safe.
Thanks to incredible teamwork, all four cows were escorted safely to their new place of safety without incident.
“We are proud to support our community in every way we can because protecting our community isn’t just about fighting crime; it’s about lending a hand whenever it’s needed,” the security team said.
The rescue was one of two livestock callouts in the space of a week. On Tuesday, SPCA Randburg also responded to goats wandering along Epsom Avenue.
“We quickly sprang into action, herding them into a nearby office park where they could be safely contained before rounding them up and bringing them back to the SPCA. They have access to fresh water and quality feed, and have already been examined by our veterinarian. They will continue to be closely monitored while receiving the care they need,” the SPCA confirmed.
It’s not every day you find cows and goats roaming the busy streets of Johannesburg, but it seems it was just one of those weeks. Thankfully, quick-thinking heroes were ready to respond, get the animals to safety and continue keeping a close eye on them.
“Unexpected rescues like these place enormous pressure on our resources, but turning animals away is simply not an option.”
