Team South Africa has successfully earned 99 medals at the 13th African Games, surpassing our previous tally to beat and making records in the process!

Accra, Ghana (22 March 2024) — In a historic moment, Team South Africa have swum, leapt, cycled and raced their way to 99 medals at the 13th African Games in Accra; neatly climbing past their historic 2019 medal tally in Morocco which saw that year’s cohort of athletes bring home 86 medals.

For the athletes part of the 2024 victory, the proof of their mind-blowing talents across a score of sporting codes, is in the podium. And with a few days left to go until the games are done and dusted, final pushes to send South Africa over the 100 medal mark are on.

Recent additions to the winner’s table have come after Athletics sporting codes started their competitive run, with particular victories in javelin after Jo-Ann van Dyk hurled her way to gold and a new African Games Record, while Alan Cumming earned the squad the 99th medal on Thursday for his bronze-basked men’s hammer throw. Not to mention, Fredriech Pretorius won 90% of his events in the decathlon and Mire Reinstorf made a Games record and welcomed her gold win.

South Africa is currently seated third on the African Games Medal Tally, just one spot behind Nigeria and two behind Egypt.

In the breakdown of South Africa’s 99 medals so far, are 29 gold, 31 silver and 39 bronze! A big chunk of our tally comes from South Africa’s swimmers, who contributed 46 meals to the pot.

The African Games are on until 24 March, and Team South Africa rightly deserves all the final-push support they can get!
