Dricus du Plessis was met by many proud South Africans after he touched down at OR Tambo this morning. The UFC Middleweight Champion brought his smile and a massive trophy:

Johannesburg, South Africa (25 January 2024) — World champion and history-maker Dricus ‘Stillknocks’ du Plessis has touched down on home soil where he was warmly welcomed by many proud South Africans.

Fans waited from the early hours of the morning today, 25 January (something that’s not uncommon for fighting fans who often get up at odd hours to watch fights play out) at OR Tambo International Airport. There, they were  among the first to see the recently crowned UFC Middleweight champ beaming in real time while back in home country.

With airport heroes’ welcomes and proud South Africans going hand-in-hand, there’s something ceremonious about champion arrivals.

A victory belt in one hand and South Africa’s flag in the other forming part of his entourage, Dricus walked out proudly. School students chanted his tag “Hulle Weet Nie Wat Ons Weet Nie”, fans took as many photos as possible, and police made sure Dricus wouldn’t need to show any troublemakers why he’s a fighting world champion.

In case you missed the momentum, Dricus became the first South African UFC Middleweight champion ever on Sunday following a split-decision victory over Sean Strickland in a Toronto showdown.

Since then, Dricus’s name has been on everyone’s lips, not least because of the pride he has for South Africa, virally evident in his explanation of “Hulle Weet Nie Wat Ons Weet Nie’.

“Thank you South Africa, it’s an honour representing our beautiful nation.”—Dricus du Plessis.
