Joel Smith’s 3-day challenge looks to give back, raise funds for 60 children in need and show the power of community.

South Africa (09 March 2026) – At just 21 years old, East London endurance runner Joel Smith is once again setting his sights on an extraordinary challenge, and it’s all for a cause close to his heart.

Later this month, Joel will attempt an incredible feat of endurance called SIXTY 60, a fundraising run designed to support the children cared for by the Kings Children’s Home on the outskirts of East London.

Joel is no stranger to pushing his limits for good. In December 2024, he captured attention when he cycled more than 900 kilometres from Namibia to the Western Cape to raise funds for the same orphanage. Now, he’s back with an even bigger mission and this time he plans to cover 300 kilometres in just three days.

The challenge will take place at Emerald Vale Brewery from 4:00 am on Friday, 27 March 2026, until 3:00 pm on Sunday, 29 March 2026. During that time, Joel plans to run 5 kilometres every 60 minutes, repeating the loop throughout the entire weekend.

Joel is running one 5km loop for each of the 60 babies and children currently being cared for at the Kings Children’s Home, with the ultimate goal of completing 300km over the course of the event.

The fundraiser is designed to be a community effort, inviting people to take part in whatever way they can. Supporters are encouraged to join Joel on the route by running or walking a 5km lap for R100, with every kilometre completed contributing to the overall total. Local businesses and corporate partners are also being invited to sponsor kilometres to help Joel reach his goal.

Joel looks to create meaningful support for the children at the Kings Children’s Home. Every rand raised during the event will go directly toward helping the organisation continue its work caring for vulnerable babies and children.

Whether you lace up your running shoes for a lap, sponsor a few kilometres or simply come along to support, help Joel reach 300km for Kings Children’s Home by donating or sponsoring kilometres here.
