The 21-year-old surfer gets to live his dream after securing qualification for the World Surf League Championship Tour.
Ballito, South Africa (17 March 2026) – For 21-year-old surfer Luke Thompsson, the dream of competing on the World Surf League Championship Tour is now a reality, and what a way to get there! Luke has officially qualified for the elite World Surf Championship Tour (CT), earning his place among the world’s best after a standout performance.
Luke pulled off a performance that propelled him into the elite ranks of the CT, carrying South Africa’s flag back into the global surf spotlight. In a video shared by World Surf League, the confirmation looked almost too much to take in.
“I can’t believe it. That was the most nerve-wracking thing I’ve ever watched in my life.”
Surfing since the age of ten, Luke has always been driven by a love for the sport and the desire to push his own limits. World Surf League captured Luke’s dream of qualifying, and now he will live it!
“What I’d love to achieve in surfing is to be able to surf until I’m 70 and love it as much as the first time I ever stood up,” he shares. “And qualifying for the CT, competing with the best, that’s a dream come true.”
One of the standout moments along the way came last year when Luke secured a historic victory at the Ballito Pro Challenger Series. However, now his victory means he follows legends like Jordy Smith, who dominated the world stage for nearly two decades, and Matthew McGillivray, who had a brief stint on the tour. His Ballito win, earned him enough points to secure his spot among the world’s best.
Now that the qualification is in hand all eyes will be on him as he prepares to take on the planet’s toughest waves.
