Team SPCA cyclists pedalled their way to hope for dogs who deserve better. Together, 64 cyclists coined over a quarter of a million rand in a fundraising initiative that shows us how dedication to hundreds of kilometres can actually take you:
Cape Town, South Africa (22 March 2024) — A squad of cyclists steadily made their mark on the Cape Town Cycle Tour last weekend for reasons far beyond adrenaline. For Team SPCA, their pedalling was fuelled by the plight of pets in need; seeing the Cycle Tour double as an opportunity to create impact bigger than any distance or victory.
Team SPCA has, over the years, used sporting events as important fundraising experiences that bring home the biggest medal of all—hope. This year, the freedom of cycling became a call to action to ‘break the chains of cruelty’. This is a cause as close to the SPCA’s heart as they come and lies in pertinence to the SPCA inspectors who deal with case after case of dogs who spend their days chained up and owners who are uneducated or uncaring.
This year, the cyclists outdid themselves on the road to helping more dogs break free of chains that should never have found them, and turned 109 kilometres into ‘a path of hope,’ as the Cape of Good Hope SPCA shares with pride.
In total, Team SPCA outdid themselves, evident in how many more cyclists participated this year, and how much they coined in their fundraising flex.
Where last year, there were 45 cyclists trekking the asphalt route, and this year there were 64. Together, they collected a wealth of change for the SPCA to the tune of R255 837! This is a huge rise from last year’s R175 000.
“Thank you for turning pedals into progress and kilometres into compassion. Because of you, many dogs will now experience the freedom to move around freely and engage in natural behaviours like running, playing and exploring, And they will know love, so much love!”—Cape of Good Hope SPCA.
