South Africa (21 July 2025) – What a weekend it was for South African sport! From Italy to Mbombela and Morocco, South African teams flew the flag high and reminded the world of our talent, resilience, and winning spirit. Whether it was on the rugby field or the football pitch, the national sides made the country proud.

Junior Springboks Win U20 Championship

Thanks to a group of rising stars who showed grit and discipline, South Africa’s rugby trophy cabinet just got more silverware. The Junior Springboks ended a 13-year title drought with a 23-15 win over New Zealand in the World Rugby U20 Championship Final in Rovigo, Italy.

Despite the humidity, the Junior Boks stayed composed. Even after New Zealand hit back, South Africa kept control and capitalised when the opposition saw a red card. With this win, the Springboks, Blitzboks, and Junior Boks are all world champions, a clear sign of South Africa’s rising rugby talent.

Springboks Wrap the Castle Lager Incoming Series

The senior Springboks wrapped up their Castle Lager Incoming Series with a dominant 55-10 victory over Georgia at Mbombela Stadium. The Boks led 22-10 at half-time and ran riot in the second half, scoring nine tries in total. Georgia, ranked 11th in the world, pushed hard, but the number one-ranked Boks were simply too clinical.

The crowd in Nelspruit got their money’s worth and more, as the Boks flexed their depth and showed why they are still the team to beat on the global stage.

After a tense 0-0 draw in regulation time, goalkeeper Andile Dlamini stepped up in the shootout with two crucial saves. Karabo Dhlamini, Tiisetso Makhubela, Gabriela Salgado and Bambanani Mbane all scored to keep Banyana’s title defence alive.

From rising rugby stars to seasoned champions and fearless footballers, South African athletes have shown the world what they are made of. And if this weekend is anything to go by, the best is yet to come.
