From high-flying jumps to golden throws, here is how two brothers, Aiden and Taelyn Smith, are making waves in their own lanes.
South Africa (29 July 2025) – In a world where talent often runs deep in families, the Smith brothers are proving just how far passion and resilience can take you, even in different sporting arenas.
Aiden Smith, after two years away from competition due to injuries, made a golden comeback in the shot put arena. Representing South Africa, he showed nerves of steel at a major international event, staying focused even as five top-ranked athletes prepared to throw after him.
Competing at the 2025 FISU World University Games, he was sixth until the last throw. It all changed. With one powerful release, Aiden launched the shot into golden territory, sealing his spot at the top of the podium. Marking a return with hopes for back-to-back-to-back golds in years to come.
While Aiden was making his mark in the field, his younger brother Taelyn Smith was flying high, quite literally, actually. Earlier this year, at the AUSC Region 5 Games in Namibia, Taelyn cleared a remarkable 2.20 metres in the high jump. That leap was not just a medal-winning performance, but a personal best and a sign of an athlete hitting his stride.
High jump, with its delicate balance of power and precision, is a different challenge altogether. However, Taelyn has shown that he belongs among the best in the region.

What makes their story special is not just the medals or records, but the journey. Two brothers, two different disciplines, united by a commitment to excellence and a deep pride in representing South Africa. Whether on the track, field, or podium, the Smith name is becoming synonymous with high performance.
