With 28 days to go, the Olympic silver medallist returns to training ahead of four demanding days at Midmar Dam.
Durban, South Africa (08 January 2025) – With just 29 days to go until one of South Africa’s most iconic open-water swimming events, the aQuellé Midmar Mile, preparations are well underway, and few stories capture the spirit of the race quite like that of Terence Parkin.
The 45-year-old swimmer, an Olympic silver medallist and one of South Africa’s most respected sporting figures, recently shared a training update as he builds towards the demanding Midmar Mile week. Terence offered a glimpse into his return to training after a short break, admitting the road back has not been easy.
After nearly three and a half weeks out of the pool, Terence described stiff shoulders and heavy fatigue, but still managed a solid two-kilometre swim in 27 minutes. Which is a positive sign as the countdown continues.
Terence is preparing for a four-day swim challenge at Midmar Dam, running from 5 to 8 February. The first two days, 5 and 6 February, will see him take part in the Charity Challenge, swimming extended distances to raise funds for meaningful causes. The focus then shifts to the main Midmar Mile races on 7 and 8 February, where thousands of swimmers from across the country and beyond will take to the water.
Beyond medals, his continued presence at events like the Midmar Mile remains a powerful symbol of resilience, inclusion and sporting excellence.
As schools, individuals, charities and organisations prepare to descend on Midmar Dam, the atmosphere is building fast.
