The Olympic Torch soared from the depths of the sea to the surface in a moment that has countries even more excited for the upcoming games. Needless to say, no amount of water can dull this fire!

Global (20 June 2024) — Along with the rest of the world, South Africa is counting down the days until the 2024 Paris Olympics next month. One symbol of the world’s most-famous sporting showcase (the iconic Olympic torch) has already touched down in metropolitan France after an incredible journey thus far that even saw it rise from the depths of the sea and pass through many torchbearers hands.

In an iconic build-up to the main event, record-breaking French freediver Alice Modolo carried the Olympic torch proudly after fetching it far below the surface of the Mediterranean Sea for her part in the Olympic Torch Relay. Alice’s was the first relay that took place in the harbour of Villefranche-sur-Mer, and remains one that won’t be soon forgotten.

The renowned torch ‘aflame underwater’ was a natural crowd-winning moment around the world; sparking excitement across continents.

Now, the Olympic torch will venture on while athletes across the world continue to push on in their training and qualification attempts.

In case you missed it, Team South Africa has shared one complete list of the South Africans who will be competing on behalf of our country, with others to follow, as well as this year’s Olympic kit.
