Christopher Kortenhoeven found a sick Green Turtle on the beach during his holiday, he called the NSRI, and it was taken to uShaka Marine World.
Kent Bay, South Africa (17 December 2021) – Christopher Kortenhoeven from Pretoria got to do something incredible during his visit to the coast; he got to help save a Green Turtle. What a way to start a holiday!
Christopher was at Umkhobi Beach in Kent Bay when he saw the turtle on the beach. He called the NSRI emergency number to notify someone to get the turtle the help needed. The NSRI Port Edward and Mpenjati Conservancy attended the call.
“Good Samaritan Christopher Kortenhoeven, from Pretoria, had come across the turtle on the beach and he raised the alarm reporting that it was opening and closing its eyes but appeared unable to make any further movements.
NSRI crew, in our sea rescue vehicle, responded to investigate and joined an Mpenjati Conservancy member on the scene.
The Green Turtle, a local species to the area, was found barely alive on the beach.”
The team alerted the uShaka Marine World, Durban. The uShaka team sent a vehicle to collect the poor turtle. A trauma board and blankets were used to transport the turtle off the beach gently, and the turtle was loaded into our sea rescue vehicle.
“We rendezvoused with the uShaka Marine World member halfway between Durban and Port Edward, at the Hibberdene off-ramp, and the turtle was taken into their care.”
The team at uShaka Marine World got the Green Turtle to their vet. They confirmed that after rehydration and nutrients fed through intravenous therapy and rewarming, it would make a good recovery. The team named the turtle Donatello for all those Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles fans out there.
