From traditional pledges to vibrant parades and well-deserved awards, Care for Wild Rhino Sanctuary honoured the brave men and women who show up every day to protect Africa’s rhinos and wild spaces this World Ranger Day.
Mpumalanga, South Africa (04 August 2026) – One of the most precious days on the wildlife conservation calendar, World Ranger Day, was observed last Friday (31 July), and the Care for Wild Rhino Sanctuary team celebrated their brave rangers with a day steeped in tradition, camaraderie, reflection, and humility.
It is an occasion the organisation holds close to its heart. Among the most significant traditions observed was the Ranger’s Pledge to the Rhino – a vow to protect Africa’s rhinos and the wild spaces they call home for generations to come. In taking the pledge, rangers promise to uphold the honour, discipline, and integrity expected of those entrusted with the species’ survival.
“Each year, the pledge is read during our World Ranger Day parade and ceremony before being signed by every person in attendance. It is then framed and placed on the wall of the Rangers’ Boardroom, joining the pledges of years gone by,” Care for Wild shared.
Earlier this year, Care for Wild was humbled when this tradition was recognised by United for Wildlife, who featured the sanctuary’s rangers in their Guardians series.
“As this year’s pledge was read once again, signed, and placed alongside those that came before it, we are reminded that this promise stands strong.”
The formalities were followed by a vibrant parade that moved through the reserve to the steady beat of African drums. Video footage captured the rangers marching and singing together across the very land they have committed their lives to protecting.
Deservingly, their tireless efforts as the “boots on the ground” were recognised during the Rangers’ Awards Ceremony, where every ranger received a token of appreciation. What makes these awards especially meaningful is that the recipients are chosen by those who know the work best.
“Throughout the year, the ranger and operations teams nominate and vote for one another, recognising leadership, courage, growth, effort and dedication, as well as celebrating five and ten years of service,” Care for Wild explained.

The festivities concluded with a shared meal, a chance to reflect, laugh, and simply enjoy each other’s company on a day that means so much to the team. It was a wholesome close to a beautiful celebration honouring the people who choose, every single day, to stand for wildlife.
Care for Wild reiterated its deep appreciation for the quiet sacrifices, heart, and responsibility each ranger carries to keep rhinos wild, wildlife safe, and our natural heritage protected.
