Dog Listening

In this video, Miss Karelse speaks firmly yet kindly to Chutney, whose gestures show that dogs often understand far more than we think.

South Africa (09 January 2026) – Miss Karelse has a way of talking to her dog, Chutney, that’s both firm and affectionate. In a short video, she’s seen disciplining Chutney, speaking to him, and he responds in a way that’s almost human by placing his paw gently on her lap as if to say, “I hear you.”

It’s moments like these that make us pause and wonder: can pets really understand us? While Chutney may not grasp every single word, he clearly picks up on tone, gestures, and intent. His reaction shows that communication between humans and animals isn’t just one-way, but a dialogue built on observation, trust, and shared experience.

Many dog owners will recognise these behaviours. From subtle tail wags to calm eye contact, pets often show us they are paying attention, adapting their actions to our moods, and responding thoughtfully to our guidance. Chutney’s gentle paw, a nudge, or even a tilt of the head demonstrates that pets can read emotions and intent in ways that go beyond simple commands. It’s a reminder of the deep connection that grows between an animal and its human companion.

These interactions also highlight the importance of the way we speak, our body language, and the energy we bring can shape how our pets respond. Training, discipline, or even just a simple conversation can strengthen the bond, teaching pets to feel safe, heard, and understood.

So, do pets really understand what we’re saying? Chutney seems to think so. His small gestures show that communication with pets goes far beyond words.
