He had every reason to stop. Six kilometres into the Comrades Marathon, Richard Laskey tore his calf. But instead of calling it quits, he kept going… because this run wasn’t about him.
South Africa (09 July 2025) – There’s something quietly powerful about people who show up for others, even when no one’s watching. People who hurt but still lace up. Who face life’s heaviest blows… and choose to do good anyway.
On this week’s Good Things with Brent Lindeque, we meet one of those people, Richard Laskey. He’s the mind behind Modern Athlete, a long-time supporter of CHOC Childhood Cancer Foundation, a proud member of “the Cows”, and someone who recently turned a painful personal moment into a powerful act of kindness.
Just 6km into the Comrades Marathon, Richard felt his calf tear. Most runners would have called it a day. He didn’t.
“I also knew why I was there. I wasn’t running for me.”
Richard pushed through the entire ultra-marathon, over 80 kilometres on an injured leg, raising awareness and funds for CHOC and the young cancer warriors who don’t get to “opt out” when things get tough.
But his story runs far deeper than a single race.
Richard speaks candidly in the episode about overcoming addiction, the heartbreaking loss of his wife, and how those moments shaped him into the man he is today. A man who chooses purpose over pain. Community over comfort. Good over giving up.
This conversation is raw and honest, but it’s also beautifully hopeful. It reminds us that while life may hurt, we can still move forward. Limping, crawling, or running full speed… we can still move forward. And we can do it for something bigger than ourselves.
