A group of South African children created a Proudly South African version of the Haka; they practised and put on a brilliant show for the community.
South Africa – Being a rugby-loving nation, we all know what the Haka is. We have seen it time and time again when the Springboks face the All Blacks.
The haka is a type of ancient Māori war dance traditionally used on the battlefield, as well as when groups came together in peace. Haka is a fierce display of a tribe’s pride, strength and unity. Actions include violent foot-stamping, tongue protrusions and rhythmic body slapping to accompany loud chanting.
Not only is the Haka used to intimidate rugby players, but it is also used as a way to honour loved ones. We have seen the Haka performed at weddings and funerals, to name a few.
In 2018, high school students at a school in New Zealand performed a traditional Maori war dance to honour their teacher who died. You can see more about that story here (grab a tissue for this one!).
Recently a group of South African children created their very own Haka and people are loving it! South Africa Live shared the video and it is quickly going viral. Everyone is saying the boys should be flown to Japan for the semi-final on Sunday.
The best part is people from all over the world (including New Zealanders) are saying how much joy the Haka has brought them. One man said he didn’t understand what they were saying but their performance brought a smile to his heart.
Take a look at their brilliant Haka below.
