Raising Giants is a mentoring program for the children of Cosmos City Primary School. Mentors guide and support the children making sure they get the most from their education
The Raising Giants organisation was started with the idea to mentor children in Cosmos City Primary school that came from difficult backgrounds. The founder Kgomotso Motsatsi approched the school to start a mentoring programme and requested that the children that join the programme be students that have had trouble keeping up with class work or that have problems at home.
“Many young people do not have good role models to help them get through life’s challenges. Problems at home can derail a successful student if not handled correctly,”
“Each and every child, is born with an unlimited dose of potential, unfortunately some are born in those conditions that only say to them “YOU CANT”… or “YOU WILL NEVER…” Raising Giants Organisation, exist for those specific kids, letting them know that “YOU CAN”, and “YOU WILL”.”
The mentor programme gets professional adults to guide and support the students and helping them learn skills that will benefit them one day, whether it be academically or personally.
“If one child from a poverty stricken household can dream and believe that they are destined to be better than their circumstances, then we can produce a world with better individuals who just aspire to become better and make this a better world. This will eventually change the world”
The programme needs to raise money to mentor the children, like offering them Computer Skills training, investing in charitable activities or taking them on outings that broaden their knowledge. So far the programme has taken the children to the Orlando Old Age home where they pampered the elderly, fed many underprivileged homes within Cosmos City and took the students to Soweto to learn about the history of Nelson Mandela’s life.
For the last 4 years, Raising Giants has run an annual fundraising event based on the entertaining TV show “Amazing Race”. The event is filled with challenges just like in the TV show. This year it will be taking place on the 16th of June 2017. For more information on the event click here.
