How a Recycling-For-Food Project Became a Lifeline for the Entire Joe Slovo Community

What began as a simple recycling-for-food idea in the heavily polluted informal settlement of Joe Slovo has grown into a vibrant community hub where waste is transformed into nourishment, learning, opportunity, and hope.

Gqeberha, South Africa (18 June 2026) – Since 2014, Narrative 4 has worked with the informal settlement community of Joe Slovo in Gqeberha to help address some of its most pressing challenges.

Among the biggest issues was litter and illegal dumping. When the rubbish collection truck did not arrive, people often discarded waste in any open space or field they could find.

In 2019, the Narrative 4 Sakhuvelwano Centre responded with a simple idea: to have community members exchange recyclable waste for food vouchers. This became the Trash to Treasure Swap Shop, where residents collect recyclables from around the area and bring them to the centre to be weighed and exchanged for vouchers they can use to buy groceries.

At first, the response was mixed, as some residents had expected to receive money instead of vouchers. Over time, however, the value of receiving food became more widely accepted, and the initiative began to grow.

“I felt a strong need that if people earn whatever they are given, then there’s a sense of mutual respect that happens. All you had to do was pick up bottles, and then you have lunch, you have supper,” said Zukiswa Allah, Program Manager for N4 Africa.

The initiative grew, and what began as a recycling-for-food initiative has since evolved into something much bigger. Built from repurposed shipping containers, the centre has become a vibrant community hub that serves children, families, and adults every day.

Today, the centre recognises the importance of play, positive stimulation, and exposure in early childhood development, and also functions as a daycare facility. It offers after-school lessons for middle and high school students, who can access academic support, counselling, opportunities for further studies, and more. The centre also includes a community kitchen, library, computer lab, sports facility, and adult skills development centre.

In 2025/2026, the team running this community-driven centre disbursed 1,961 food vouchers to residents of Joe Slovo, and the programme currently caters to more than 273 households. On the educational front, more than 201 students attend the centre every week for daycare and after-school services. Of those students, 30 daycare learners have graduated to primary school, while four high school learners have gone on to college and university.

The Narrative 4 Sakhuvelwano Centre is a grassroots innovation that shows how a simple response to two challenges, food insecurity and waste, can grow into an ecosystem of opportunity, learning, and connection.
