Popular fire photographer Justin Sullivan has started a campaign called Before the Burns to raise funds for various fire prevention and education projects.
Justin Sullivan the photographer behind the lens of some of the most tragically beautiful photo’s of South African wildfires has decided to take matters into his own hands by selling some of his images to raise funds. The funds will be donated to various organisations that work to prevent fires or to educate people about fire and fire safety.
The fire photographer announced the ‘Before the Burns’ campaign on his Facebook page and shared 100 photo’s to honour South African Firefighters. He also shared a few stats about the Cape fires.
More than 17 000 fires have been reported in the Western Cape throughout the season: Direct damage is estimated to exceed R500 million with 142 fatalities.
The Western Cape experienced large scale damage to both the human and environmental interfaces over the past few months – Although It is crucial that our fynbos biome experiences fire in order to rejuvenate, the frequency in young veld and intensity on the urban fringes has been destructive
People wanting to contribute to the fund, if within the first 100 donors, can select one of the 100 photo’s honouring South African firefighters, make a donation of R 1,000.00 or more and they will receive that image on an A3 print.
