It’s not every day your local SPCA Inspector gets to hang with a TV star!
Johannesburg, South Africa (05 May 2026) – The Randburg SPCA’s Inspector Khumalo recently had a rollercoaster of a day, stepping in as protection services for a trained rat on a movie set in Johannesburg.
Yes, the rat is starring in a TV production. Yes, Inspector Khumalo basically stepped in as his big but loveable bodyguard.
The two hit it off quickly, and Inspector Khumalo had won the affections of his tiny rat companion in no time.
“The role of your local SPCA has so many layers, many people find it hard to believe. Our mandate is to prevent cruelty to animals and this is across every avenue.” the SPCA shared, along with adorable snaps of the inspector and his new friend. “Today we were asked to supervise a television production which was using a trained rat on set. The star was a cutey and so loveable.”
But, as most good TV dramas go, there was a plot twist. Somewhere along the line, Inspector Khumalo misbehaved, and the production crew felt it necessary to lock him away. The SPCA are now taking donations to bail him out and get him back to his duties as an animal hero.
“The production felt our Inspector Khumalo needed a time out and duly locked him away. We would love to ‘bail’ him out, this would allow Inspector Khumalo to continue his fantastic work with those that have no voice.’ shared the SPCA. “If you would like to assist, here are our banking details, reference ‘bail money’” it added.
