The World Aquatics Swimming World Cup has come to an end after three weeks and three different countries. But, what remained consistent in these competitive waters was South Africa’s Matthew Sates and his waves of talent which were recently commended in the Cup’s final podium placements.
Budapest, Hungary (26 October 2023) — The World Aquatics Swimming World Cup has blown its final whistle with a proud end to the three-part tournament for South Africa. 20-year-old Matthew Sates stuck to his title as water-bender and gave aquatic life a run for their money in all three stretches of the competition (Berlin, Athens and Budapest); resulting in a final crowning that was well-deserved.
Sates began his victory streak in Berlin with two gold wins for his 200m Medley and 200m Butterfly and silver for the 400 Medley.
In Athens, he kept the momentum going alongside 19-year-old teammate Pieter Coetzé who, together, basked in the top 5 spotlight for the Athens heats and secured silver and gold for South Africa.
Budapest saw Sates blaze on as he earned three gold medals for the 200m Medley, 400m Medley and 200m Butterfly.
This incredible end to a strong series of performances was commended by World Aquatics as Sates was crowned in the World Cup’s Top 3; earning a bronze podium placement overall where he stood tall for his team as the only South African placed.
The young swimmer has since returned home to a country that couldn’t be prouder.
