South Africans made records tumble in Tshwane yesterday, including a long-standing record set by Caster Semenya and other athletes in 2016!
Tshwane, South Africa (13 March 2025) — South African athletes have been on a roll when it comes to record-breaking as of late! Tshwane saw two records tumble yesterday, including a long-standing South African record.
At the ASA Grand Prix series, a World Athletics Continental Tour Challenger, the first record to tumble down hailed from the hammer.
Leandri Holtzhausen valiantly crushed the national record in women’s hammer throw when she tossed a lengthy 67.96 meters, adding 1.41 meters to the previous record she set.
Then came the quartet of Shirley Nekhubui, Miranda Coetzee, Marlie Viljoen and Zeney Geldenhuys. In the women’s 4.400m relay, the athletes showed up and showed off to crack a record earned at the African Athletics Championships that had sat for nine years.
The athletes conquered the relay in just over three minutes, claiming a time of 3.28.30.
The previous record had been set by Caster Semenya Jeanelle Griessel, Wenda Nel and Justine Palframan.
“It was a great opener to the South African track and field season,” praised President of Athletics South Africa, James Moloi. “I’m struggling to hold my excitement at the rate our athletes are breaking national records this early [in] the season.”
These feats follow other records we’ve seen tumble this year already. Adriaan Wildschutt recently broke the South African short track 5,000m record, thanks to an electric performance in Boston. In France, athletes Prudence Sekgodiso and Tshepo Tshite set new records on acclaimed indoor tracks!
