Team SASAPD collects 26 gold medals, 41 silver, 4 bronze, and 11 new U14 South African records, showing that SA’s Para swimming future is making waves.

Windhoek, Namibia (29 September 2025) – A few days ago, a team of bright young South Africans returned to the international para swimming stage after years of absence, and what a comeback it has been! Competing at the Bank Windhoek NASFED Short Course Nationals in Swakopmund, Namibia, Team SASAPD has shown the world that South Africa is back in the pool, stronger and faster than ever.

This appearance is historic. The last time South Africa’s para swimmers represented the country abroad was in Sydney back in 1999, and later Sheffield in 2008. Now, under the guidance of Paralympic legend and now coach Tadgh Slattery, the next generation has dived in looking to make history.

From the very first races, the medals started rolling in. By Sunday, 28 September, Team SASAPD had already bagged 26 golds, 41 silvers, and 4 bronzes, with 14 personal bests and 11 new under-14 South African records to their name. Proof of a team filled with potential.

Youngsters like Tiaan Terblanche and Elyne Potgieter are already rewriting the record books, while Melisca Everson and James Willers are showing that the older age categories are just as competitive. In the relays, the South Africans have been unstoppable! Powering their way to yet another gold in the mixed medley with dazzling splits that had the crowd on their feet.

For many of these swimmers, this is their first taste of international competition, but they have embraced it with the confidence of seasoned athletes. The results show South Africa’s para swimming programme is alive and producing stars of the future.

The return is about announcing South Africa’s presence on the global stage once again. And if this week in Namibia is anything to go by, the future of para swimming looks golden.
