South Africa’s student-athletes are racking up medals and making us proud, with 10 medals so far and counting!
Berlin, Germany (23 July 2025) – From the track to the pool and field, something special is happening at the FISU World University Games, and Team South Africa is right in the middle of it.
Just after being the first African country to break into the Top 10 on the medal table, Team South Africa once again added a few more medals to the tally.
Gabriella Marais sprinted her way into the spotlight with a time of 11.51 in the Women’s 100m Final, bagging a brilliant bronze in her Games debut. A performance that proves when preparation meets purpose, magic happens.

On the men’s side, Bayanda Walaza made sure the world knows his name once again. He clocked 10.16 in the Men’s 100m Final, earning the title of fastest student-athlete in the world! Not bad for his first FISU appearance.
The swimming pool was just as electric. Olivia Nel added more bronze brilliance to the medal count, finishing third in the Women’s 50m Backstroke with a time of 27.91. Her splash shows that South African swimmers are in top form.
And do not forget the shot put circle where Colette Uys threw an incredible 17.34 metres to secure yet another bronze medal for Team SA. Strength, grit, and pride carried her right to the podium.
As it stands, South Africa sits 8th on the FISU medal table, with 10 medals collected so far and the action is not over yet.
These young athletes are not just competing they are carrying the flag high, showing the world the power of South African talent
