Temba Bavuma Gets the Keys to the City

The Proteas captain reflects on his journey from Langa to the global stage after receiving recognition for his contributions on and off the cricket field.

Cape Town, South Africa (03 February 2026) – South African cricket captain Temba Bavuma has been officially recognised by the City of Cape Town, receiving the prestigious Civic Honours Award in a moment that celebrated not only his sporting achievements, but his roots, leadership and lasting impact beyond the field.

The ceremony, held after he was unable to attend last November due to national duty in India, saw the Proteas skipper presented with a civic scroll by the Cape Town Mayor and signing the Civic Honours Book. This is a formal recognition reserved for individuals who have made significant contributions to their communities.

For Temba, the honour carried special meaning. Born and raised in Langa, one of Cape Town’s oldest townships, his journey from local cricket grounds to the global stage has been both historic and deeply personal.

“I think my career has been an interesting one, starting from Langa, where cricket was just a passion. Never in my wildest dreams did I think I would be sitting where I am now, being honoured and recognised in this moment. This is big for me.”

The Civic Honours Award recognises achievements both on and off the field, and Temba’s leadership has helped usher South African cricket into a new era. In the past year alone, he has captained the Proteas to some of the most significant victories in the country’s cricketing history.

Under his leadership, South Africa completed a dominant 2–0 Test series win over India, sealing a 408-run victory in Guwahati. Temba also led the Proteas to victory in the ICC World Test Championship, ending a 27-year wait for a global trophy.

As a proud son of Langa, Cape Town and South Africa, Temba Bavuma continues to carry the nation with quiet authority.
