At its heart, true wildlife conservation thrives only when the people living alongside it flourish too. With every vegetable garden, early learning centre upgrade and environmental educational programme in Mandlakazi, this is exactly what the Zululand Conservation Trust aims to achieve.

KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa (24 July 2026) – Communities in the Mandlakazi region in northern KwaZulu-Natal often face severe socioeconomic challenges alongside ongoing conservation and upliftment efforts.

Residents struggle with poverty, food insecurity, and limited access to basic services, exacerbating environmental degradation and human-wildlife conflicts. Moreover, these communities, many of which are near protected areas, lack access to resources and infrastructure, negatively impacting early learning centres’ sustainability and hindering conservation education efforts.

This is where the Zululand Conservation Trust’s (ZCT) work extends beyond wildlife protection, reaching straight into the heart of its surrounding communities through holistic initiatives like vegetable gardens and educational support.

“Our team works alongside the communities of the Mandlakazi region, helping plant organic vegetable gardens at local crèches so young children have access to nutritious meals every day,” ZCT shares.

Beyond providing immediate nutrition, these gardens empower community members with the tools to grow their own food, while creating real job opportunities along the way.

The initiative proposes multifaceted solutions, including agro-ecological food gardens and boreholes for water access in Mandlakazi. In KwaSekhane, the focus is on green gardens, commercial farming, and market partnerships.

Education remains one of the most important areas of community support, particularly for children living in the communities surrounding the reserve (Zululand Rhino Orphanage). Local early learning centres have undergone upgrades for sustainability, including eco-friendly facilities and expanded capacity at early learning centres.

Youth environmental education programmes further engage students through interactive experiences, providing essential resources and tutoring to disadvantaged youth.

Through this community-driven approach, over 167 children and their families in Mandlakazi now receive vital support, allowing them to put food on the table, have access to economic opportunities and have the means to start overcoming their struggles.

With each project, ZCT continues to prove that the most lasting wildlife conservation happens when the people who live alongside nature are given the tools to thrive right along with it.
