Banyana Banyana begin their WAFCON 2026 campaign against Tanzania with continental glory and World Cup qualification in sight.
Casablanca, Morocco (27 July 2026) – Banyana Banyana are back on the continental stage, and the road to another WAFCON title starts today.
South Africa kick off their CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) 2026 campaign against Tanzania on Monday evening at the Moulay Rachid Stadium in Casablanca, with the reigning African champions looking to make an early statement.
After spending the past week in Morocco fine-tuning their preparations, Desiree Ellis’ side know just how important a winning start can be as they chase back-to-back continental crowns.
The opening clash won’t be easy. Tanzania have proved to be tough opponents in previous meetings, with the last encounter between the two sides ending in a draw. But Banyana Banyana are confident they have done the work needed to hit the ground running. Coach Desiree Ellis believes this is the match that will set the mood for the rest of the camp.
“The first match is very important as it sets the tone for the rest of the tournament; you have to go all out with guns blazing. Everything we have done, everything we have prepared, was towards this game because you cannot prepare further than that without getting a good result.”
South Africa find themselves in Group B alongside Tanzania, Ivory Coast and Burkina Faso, with every point crucial in the race for the knockout stages.
Captain Refiloe Jane echoed her coach’s thoughts, warning that Tanzania will be a determined test while stressing the importance of making chances count from the outset.
There could also be a special milestone on the night for midfielder Linda Motlhalo. If selected, the midfield star will earn her 100th senior appearance for Banyana Banyana.
There’s even more at stake than continental silverware this year. The four semi-finalists will automatically qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil, adding extra motivation for every team competing in Morocco.
