South African athletes gain visibility, opportunities, and redefine how they connect with fans, brands, and scouts.

Johannesburg, South Africa (03 September 2025) – South African athletes are stepping into a new digital age with the official launch of Discover Sport, a purpose-driven social media platform dedicated exclusively to sport. Introduced at the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC), the platform promises to give every athlete a voice, a stage, and the chance to be discovered.

The app is designed to level the playing field for athletes who often go unseen due to limited resources or a lack of exposure. By blending user-generated content with professional sports media, Discover Sport allows players to share their stories, showcase training and match highlights, and connect directly with scouts, brands, and their supporters

For athletes, this is not just another social media app, but a lifeline.

Ntando“The Zulu Warrior” Zondi

Mixed martial artist Ntando, known in the cage as “The Zulu Warrior,” has experienced firsthand the difference the platform can make. He explained that support from Discover Sport enabled him to fund his first international trip, a moment that kick-started his global fighting career. Since then, he has competed in eight countries and continues to build his name.

“What Discover Sport has done for me is life-changing,” he said. “As athletes, we don’t always have the time or skills to create polished content, but the team makes that possible. The platform saves time, connects us to scouts and sponsors, and brings us closer to real opportunities.”

With MMA gaining momentum in South Africa, Ntando believes Discover Sport will push the sport further into the mainstream and help more fighters achieve international success.

Johanita Scholtz Albertse – Flying the Flag for Badminton

For badminton player Johanita, the platform has been transformative on a personal level. Initially hesitant about social media, she said Discover Sport gave her the confidence to share videos and embrace her identity as an athlete online.

“Normally I would never post videos of myself, but through Discover Sport, I’ve grown comfortable sharing content. It’s helped me develop as a person and as a player,” she said.

Johanita hopes the platform will help grow badminton across South Africa and Africa, where it remains relatively unknown compared to its huge popularity in Asia.

Stephen Watson – The Bigger Vision

Stephen Watson, Founder of Discover Sport, believes the platform is about more than highlights and results; it’s about telling authentic stories.

“Every athlete has a journey that includes setbacks as well as victories,” he explained. “When athletes share their personalities, struggles, and triumphs, they connect more deeply with fans and brands. That authenticity is powerful.”

Stephen emphasised that Discover Sport is for all disciplines, from rugby to chess, MMA to show jumping, ensuring that so-called “Cinderella sports” finally have a dedicated home.

“There’s no longer an excuse. Whether or not a professional camera is on you, you can take out your phone and tell your story. If you do it sincerely and authentically, you’ll build a stronger following and we’ll help give you a greater chance of being discovered.”

One of the biggest barriers for athletes has always been visibility. Many lack access to professional production teams or mainstream broadcasts, but Discover Sport aims to ensure that is no longer a limitation.
